Leo Vance was seven years old. He had big, observant eyes and a habit of collecting smooth river stones. He had been gone for forty-eight hours.
Forty-eight hours in forty-degree weather with nothing but a thin "Paw Patrol" hoodie.
"Bear, find!" I commanded, my voice hoarse from shouting.
Bear, my Belgian Malinois, was the best K9 on the force, but even he was struggling. The scent was cold, washed away by the relentless drizzle that turned the forest floor into a graveyard of rotting pine needles and slick mud. Behind me, the search party—mostly locals with flashlights and fading hope—was slowing down.
"Elias," Sheriff Miller's voice crackled over the radio, heavy with the kind of fatigue that gets into your bones. "The sun's going down in twenty minutes. If we don't find a trace before then, we're pulling the volunteers. It's too dangerous for them in the Devil's Throat."
The Devil's Throat. A jagged ravine three miles from the Vance's back porch. It was full of cave-ins and old mining shafts.

"Shut up, Jenkins," I snapped.
I inched forward on my knees, the mud soaking through my uniform. "Leo, I need to see your hands. If you're hurt, I can help. I have a magic bandage in my pocket, remember? The one with the stars on it?"
I was lying, of course. I just needed him to let go.
I reached out, very slowly, and gripped his thin, frozen wrist. He tried to pull away, but he was too weak. His strength was gone, fueled only by pure, unadulterated terror.
"It's okay," I whispered. "I've got you."
I gently, firmly, rotated his shoulder. I pulled his right hand out from behind his back.

But here's the kicker, Elias—he says that specific strain was a hybrid created by your grandmother. It died out when the Glass Garden burned. There are no seeds left. No nurseries carry it. It's extinct."
"Nothing is ever really extinct in these woods," I said, my mind racing. "They just wait for the right time to grow back."
Just then, the door to the room opened, and Dr. Silas Reed stepped out. Silas was eighty if he was a day, a man who had delivered half the town and signed the death certificates for the other half.
